Sporting Gijon 0 - 1 Real Madrid (Highlights): La Liga Sunday

Sporting Gijon 0 - 1 Real Madrid

Jose Mourinho may well have been hidden from view in the darkness of Sportings VIP box, but his team were thrust into the limelight, riding out a barrage of abuse from the stands and a stream of fouls from Sportings players to hold out for an invaluable win. They were promised a 'burning oven' of an atmosphere from Sporting coach Manolo Preciado, and they got it. El Molinón was in vociferous mood, letting Mourinho know in no small way, that his derogatory comments didn't get down too well in Asturias.

On the field it was a true battle of attrition. Sporting knew they couldn't match Real Madrid for skill. So the men in red and white, roared on by a partisan home crowd, got thoroughly stuck in Madrids stars. It was brutal at times, with Mesut Ozil and Cristiano Ronaldo the recipients of some overzealous challenges. Credit to Real Madrid though, they never lost their heads. Patience was the key, especially in a first half were chances were at a premium and defences were on top. Alberto Botia and Gregory were impeccable at the back, restricting Madrid to a Higuiain shot that struck the base of the post and fell into the grateful arms of Juan Pablo.

The second half followed a similar pattern, Gijon running and puffing. Real Madrid assured, confident, sure that their chance will come. Karim Benzema came on and looked dangerous probing in and around the box. The Frenchman looks a different player since Mourinho has started to nuture him. And he played a large role in Madrids winner, as their patience was rewarded with Higuains winner eight minutes from time. Sergio Ramos swung in a cross from the right, Benzema peeling away at the back post to plant a header on goal. Juan Pablo got two hands to it, but the ball squirmed out of his reach and there was Gonzalo Higuain to tap into an empty net.

Seconds later Iker Casillas came to his sides rescue with a stunning one-handed stop from David Barrals header. Saint Iker is back in business. And so it was that Real Madrid held out for a win that maintains their one point lead over Barcelona. You can't help but think this is the sort of fixture Real Madrid would have drawn or lost in recent years. Mourinho has instilled a discipline in his defence and midfield, helped tremendously by the performances of Ricardo Carvalho and Sami Khedira, that allows their potent attack to do the rest. In this Real Madrid you can trust.

Real Zaragoza 1 - 2 Sevilla

Real Zaragoza went from injury time joy to injury time agony in a week. If last weeks tie against Mallorca sent the Zaragoza faithful home with a spring in their step, this weeks action will have sent them home wondering why on earth their team insist on giving cheap goals away. Todays defeat against the ten men of Sevilla sees Real Zaragoza hit rock bottom of La Liga. Jose Aurelio Gays men surely have far too much quality to go down. They said the same three years ago when Diego Milito, Ricardo Oliveira and Sergio Garcia graced La Romareda. No prizes for gueesing what happened that season.

Luis Fabiano struck the games opening goal, latching onto a superb through ball from Frederic Kanoute to fire past Toni Doblas on the half hour mark. It was a rare moment of quality in a match in which neither side managed to wrest control of the midfield, leaving the strikers starved of ammunition. Gay sent his side out with five at the back, a tactic that he will surely have to discard at home where they simply cannot afford not to win. You can undertand his concern with Zaragoza leaking goals for fun early in the season, but their away form is hopeless at best. They desparately need to convert La Romareda into a fortress.

The match sprung into life after half-time. Zaragoza were visibly lifted by the presence of talented substitute Nicolas Bertolo and it was the Argentinian who dragged his team level with a thumping header from a Gabi corner. From then on both teams set about grabbing a winner, a point seemingly not good enough for either. Sevillas task was made that little bit harder with the dismissal of Fernando Navarro, still it didn't stop them from piling forward. In the dying seconds of the match their bravery was rewarded, courtesy of the habitual moment of madness that Zaragoza treat us to on a weekly basis. Sevilla must have felt their christmas had come a month early.

This time it was Jiri Jarosik who was to blame for an inexplicable backheel in his own half that set Alvaro Negredo through on goal. Like Fabiano he made no mistake when one-on-one with Doblas, sliding the ball past the keeper to strike the injury time winner. Jose Aurelio Gay held his head in his hands. He cannot be held to account for these isolated actions from his lacklustre players, but with his team alone at the foot of La Liga on seven points he'll be lucky to survive the week.

Valencia 2 - 0 Getafe

How Valencia needed this win having been in freefall for the last month. Goals from Tino Costa and David Navarro were enough to earn all three points in the Mestalla against a Getafe team that are in all kinds of trouble, having failed to win in their last six matches. Joaquin and Juan Mata were impressive for the home side, creating plenty of danger down the wings, while the defence reverted back to early season form with a comfortable shut-out, helped by the dip in form suffered by the Getafe attack. So Valencia jump back into the top four, with Getafe sitting in mid-table but only four points away from the relegation zone.

Malaga 1 - 0 Levante

Manuel Pellegrini made it a happy debut at Malaga, as his new team put their dreadful home run of five defeats from five behind them to earn a first win of the season at La Rosaleda. It wasn't pretty and Levante had their chances, but with the two goalkeepers the stand-out performers, Eliseus thumping 35 yard drive was enough to steal all three points. Pellegrini has stated he expects more from his team, but right now they need results.

Hercules 2 - 1 Real Sociedad

The formbook was turned on it's head in the Rico Perez as Hercules came from behind to snatch a win against Real Sociedad. The first half was dominated by Real, with young Frenchman Antoine Greizmann turning in an electric performance, topped off with the games opening goal. But Hercules hit back after half-time, David Trezeguet continuing his fine form with the leveller before cult hero Royston Drenthe sent the home crowd ballistic with a rocket of a free-kick that ended up settling the match.

Racing Santander 0 - 0 Espanyol

A scoreline that reflected what was mindnumbing game of football, with only the odd flash of ambition. And when they came it was more often than not from Racing. Unfortunately for Miguel Angel Portugal and his team, they found Cameroon keeper Carlos Kameni in inspired form, repelling all that flew towards him, including an Ariel Nahuelpan penalty after half an hour. Racing also felt they had a case for a last minute penalty, but to the fury of the Sardinero crowd the ref waved away their appeals and the match ended all square.

Mallorca 0 - 0 Deportivo La Coruña

A match completely lacking in ambition, characterised by Depors ultra-defensive 5-4-1 formation designed to hold out for away points. Depor coach Lotina may well have bemoaned his teams lack of creativity in the final third but this team is designed not to lose rather than search for the win. Mallorca also seemed content to hold back, and with the matches two strikers, Riki and Webo both demonstrating they have a long way to go to establish themselves as consistent goalscorers, a 0-0 draw was always on the cards.

Real Madrid 2 - 0 Atletico Madrid (Highlights) - La Liga Matchday 10

Real Madrid ensured that Atletico Madrid's shocking derby record would carry on into 2011 as two early goals from Ricardo Carvalho and Mesut Ozil sentenced Quique Sanchez Flores's team to yet another defeat at the hands of their eternal rivals. Just like they had done in Milan, Jose Mourinhos men burst out of the blocks with Atletico struggling to get a foothold in the game. And the 'Rojiblancos' were made to pay for their slow start as centre-back Carvalho popped up out of nowhere to waltz through a static defence and slot past birthday boy David De Gea.

Atletico were rocking, and they were still coming to terms with going behind when Mesut Ozil scored the second. Real Madrid won a free-kick out wide on the right, with Ozil curling a delicious cross-come-shot that left De Gea rooted to the spot. At that point it appeared as if Atleti were going to be handed a thrashing, but instead of pushing for the killer third, Real Madrid began to sit back on their lead which allowed Atletico a route back into the match.

Thiago started to see plenty of the ball in the middle, although with Sergio Agüero cutting an isolated figure upfront and Diego Forlan struggling to impose himself on the match, Carvalho and Pepe were never put under any sustained pressure. One moment of controversy to come out of the first half was a possible penalty decision on Xabi Alonso after he blocked a Reyes shot with his hand, the referee deeming the action as ball to hand, much to the desperation of the Atleti players.

The second half followed a similar pattern with both teams creating scoring opportunities, Gonzalo Higuain and Diego Forlan both striking the post with a glorious volleys and Iker Casillas thwarting Agüero in a one-on-one, but there were to be no more goals. Man-of-the-match Ricardo Carvalho left the field early courtesy of a nasty-looking eye injury after he was elbowed by substitute Diego Costa, but that would end up being the only blot on yet another derby day victory for Real Madrid.

Barcelona never looked in any danger of falling to a shock defeat in Getafe as they recovered their best form to run out easy 1-3 winners, keeping them in touch with leaders Real Madrid. Lionel Messi was at his sublime best as he and David Villa tore through a helpless Getafe defence to score two superb goals which put Barca out of reach after only 30 minutes. For long periods, the Getafe players were chasing shadows, as Barcelona lit up the Coliseum with some stunning one-touch football that brought back memories of the sextruplet winning team of 2008/2009.

Messi could easily have had three or four on another day, but he found Getafe keeper Jordi Codina in inspired form. Yet the keeper was badly at fault for Barca's third, playing a poor pass out to defender Cata Diaz which lead to the defender conceding possession on the edge of his box, and then failing to block Pedro's run on goal, leaving the Barca man with a simple tap in. Getafe were handed a lifeline on 70 minutes when Pique was sent off for handling in the box, Manu reducing the deficit from the spot. Then Getafe received a red card of their own, Derek Boateng seeing a second yellow, and with him went Getafes hopes of rescuing anything from the match.

Villarreal fell behind to an early Fernando Llorente goal, but the 'Yellow Submarine' were ultimately too much for Athletic Bilbao from then on, creating countless chances and scoring four. At times it was incessant pressure from Villarreal, Borja Valero controlling proceedings in midfield and Guiseppe Rossi a constant menace in attack. Nilmar levelled the match on 39 minutes, and a shocking error from Bilbao keeper Gorka Iraizoz let the home side take a half-time lead, as his dreadful clearance fell straight at the feet of Santi Cazorla, who made no mistake with a first-time shot.

The second half saw Villarreal at their vibrant best, carving through Athletic Bilbao at will. Guiseppe Rossi had been guilty of some poor finishing throughout the match, but he made no mistake with only five minutes left to make the points safe. Substitute Jefferson Montero then gave the scoreline a more realistic look with a fourth in the dying seconds of the match.

In the weekends other matches, Espanyol maintained their fantastic start to the season with a 35 yard scorcher from Javi Marquez after only a minute enough for a victory over Malaga which leaves 'Los Pericos' in the Champions League spots and Malaga rooted to the bottom of La Liga. Manuel Pellegrini has a hell of a job on his hands at La Rosaleda. Real Zaragoza relieved some of the pressure on manager Jose Aurelio Gay, but they had to come from behind twice to eventually overcome Mallorca with a last minute penalty from Gabi. Real Sociedad had Joseba Llorente to thank as the striker scored the only goal of their match against Racing Santander, a win that places the Basque club in the European positions.

Osasuna finally found their shooting boots for the visit of Hercules, Monreal, Lolo and Vadocz getting the goals to give the home team a 3-0 win which lifts them into mid-table. Deportivo La Coruña finally put to bed their disastrous away form which had seen them fail to win away from El Riazor for over a year. Riki and Aythami got the goals which consigned Levante to a 1-2 defeat which keeps the newly promoted side in the relegation zone. Finally, Sporting Gijon and Almeria had to settle for a point apiece, Nacho Novo notching a late equaliser to cancel out Almerias opener from Miguel Corona. It was just reward for an improved second half showing by Sporting after Almeria had dominated the first 45 minutes.

Malaga sack manager Jesualdo Ferreira - Manuel Pellegrini favourite to take over

Málaga’s 2-1 defeat to Real Sociedad at La Rosaleda last Sunday saw the team plunge into the bottom three for the first time this season, prompting Qatari owner Sheikh Abdullah to finally lose patience with manager Jesualdo Ferreira. The loss to the txuri-urdin means the Costa del Sol side have not picked up a point at home in five games, and the former Porto boss has paid the price by being axed after just nine league games in charge.

It’s all a far cry from the mood of optimism which swept through the club only two months ago, the €17 million outlay on new players promising better times ahead for the long-suffering fans. After the game at the weekend the mood around the stadium was one of dejection, but despite the whistles and waving of pañuelos at the final whistle it seemed the fans were still prepared to give Ferreira more time to get it right. Not so the Sheikh, who decided to act before things deteriorated further.

Admittedly the fixture list hasn’t been kind; the first four fixtures at home - Valencia, Sevilla, Villarreal and Real Madrid - couldn’t have been much tougher, though Ferreira has possibly been the architect of his own downfall. Of his buys only Owusu-Abeiye and Rondón have come up to anything like scratch, while the jury is still out on the others - Sandro Silva, Sebástian Fernández and Malagueño, along with goalkeepers Galatto and Ruben - who have all been out injured at one time or another

The Osasuna away game two weeks ago was the first time this season the strikers have failed to hit the back of the net, so no complaints on that score, but the 21 goals conceded in just 9 games is totally unacceptable. Last year Málaga narrowly avoided going down by a single point, yet only conceded 48 goals; this was one less than fourth-placed Sevilla and only bettered by six teams in the division. However, Ferreira still felt the need to go out and buy two centre-backs in Stadsgaard and Malagueño (who is still to make his league debut), meaning the defence was top-heavy in that department. Youngster Iván González was a regular at the heart of the defence last season alongside Weligton - this year he has played a solitary game and hardly gets to sit on the bench! Ferreira obviously didn’t fancy him, but it doesn’t make it any less puzzling. .

To give Ferreira some credit his policy of playing a 4-3-3 attacking system - he employed it successfully at Porto - was admirable, as witnessed by the five goals in the opening 34 minutes at Zaragoza, yet when his team came under the cosh in certain games he didn’t have a Plan ‘B’ to fall back on. His tactics have also earned him a fair amount of criticism from local reporters - his miserable demeanour did not endear himself to them - and he fell out with a journalist from respected sports daily Marca when he refused to answer questions in a press conference, leading to the other assembled hacks walking out en masse.

The policy of buying up-and-coming young players instead of tried and trusted pros was always going to be a risky one, but it has still been a surprise that Sheikh Abdullah has lost faith after such a short time. Even so, he is a businessman and expects some kind of return on his investment, which is why he has reorganised the club from top to bottom.

At the moment Ferreira’s replacement looks certain to be ex-Real Madrid and Villarreal boss Manuel Pellegrini. Sources from Fox Sports television channel indicate that the Chilean will be flying into Málaga on Wednesday to finalise details on a two and a half year contract.

Interview with Duda of Malaga

Duda came back from the World Cup in South Africa with a pubis injury and has still to kick a ball this season for Malaga CF. During this interview with David Redshaw, he spoke of his injury, the new sheik in charge of the club and manager Jesualdo Ferreira, who only hours ago has been sacked, with ex-Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini currently the favourite to take over. It would appear a shocking set of results at home, the last of which was to Real Sociedad, is what has spurred Sheik Abdullah into action.

You’re now kicking a ball again. How’s it going?
“Very well, I’m getting better every day. There’s no point being negative about it and I hope to be back soon, but it’s important to gain confidence once more.”

Do you regret having delayed your surgery?
“Not at all. It was a difficult decision but I’d never had pubis problems before, and having talked with the specialists we initially decided on treatment rather than going under the knife. However, six weeks later it had still not responded so they told me it was best to operate.”

What has been the worst thing about being out?
“The loneliness and having to do all the running on my own. It’s the first time I’ve been out for any length of time but I’ve got to make the most of it. I’m well on the road to recovery and it shouldn’t be too long now.”

What do you think of the team?
“I’m enjoying watching them. We are improving bit by bit but we’ve lacked a bit at the back. I hope we’ll soon be more solid because we have no problem scoring goals.”

Everybody wants you back. What would be your best position in the 4-3-3 system?
“I don’t think about where would be best. I just want to get back playing and then I’ll do what the manager asks of me and help my teammates. Jesualdo Ferreira is a manager I like and he commands a lot of respect in Portugal.”

What can you tell us about Sheikh Abdullah?
“I learned he had bought Málaga during the World Cup. The club has changed 100% and it’s gone from being a selling one to a buying one - that’s very important. Apart from that the transformation has been incredible. Somebody with power has now come in and he is showing that he wants to build a big established club.”

Malaga 1 - 4 Real Madrid (Highlights) | Barcelona 2 - 1 Valencia

Malaga 1 - 4 Real Madrid

Who said Real Madrid are lacking in firepower? They couldn't score a goal for love nor money two weeks ago, but ten goals in two matches has seen Madrid jump to the summit in La Liga. Not only have they conceded the least goals they have now also scored the most and it's clear Mourinho's message is beginning to hit home. Of course, it was only a matter of time before Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain hit form, possibly spurred on by reports of Madrid chasing a new striker, and they were irresistible in La Rosaleda as they ripped a shell-shocked Malaga to pieces. Cristiano was at the heart of everything last night, with two goals and two assists as the Portuguese star carried on his impressive international form onto the club stage. Mesut Özil also put in a dazzling shift as he proved he can make things happen away from the Bernabeu, while Higuain showed the world his radar is back in business. Much of the talk before the match had been about whether Real Madrid could cope with Malaga's speed and incision on the break, but in the end it was yet another home defeat for the Malagueños and a defiant show of strength from the team now looking down on the rest.

Barcelona 2 - 1 Valencia
Barcelona survived a first half onslaught from Valencia to nick two second half goals and jump above Valencia in the table. Pablo Hernandez had slotted Los Che in front following a surging run from full back Matheiu, and could so easily have made it two, denied by Victor Valdes when through on goal. It would have been no less than what Valencia deserved having starved Barcelona of possession. It was a surreal first 45 minutes, the Camp Nou so accustomed to seeing their side dominate proceedings, saw their team struggle badly, continuing a worrying patch of form that has already seen them drop five points at home so far this season. But commeth the hour, commeth the man, and that man was Xavi Hernandez, returning from a spell on the sidelines to set up two goals after half time for Andres Iniesta and Carlos Puyol. The first assist was a fantastic one-two with Iniesta, and the second a pinpoint cross which was headed home emphatically by Puyol. With David Villa and Leo Messi off-colour once again, it was exactly the tonic that Barca needed and Pep Guardiola will be hoping it awakes his team from their recent slumber.

Interview with Malagas Quincy and Eliseu

Tomorrow night Real Madrid travel to the Rosaleda Stadium in Malaga for what promises to be an explosive 90 minutes of football. After struggling badly last year, a rejuvenated Malaga have produced some electric performances so far this season, not to mention an avalanche of goals such as the five in thirty minute job that smashed Real Zaragoza to pieces on Matchday 2 at La Romareda. Two of the men who form an integral part of this lightning-quick side capable of ripping any team apart on the counter are Eliseu and Quincy Owusu-Abeyie. Eliseu is enjoying a renaissance at Malaga after a season getting back in form at Zaragoza while Quincy has taken no time at all in winning over the home support with some dazzling shows down the right wing after arriving on loan from Qatari club Al-Sadd. Here you have an exclusive interview with these two speed-demons, conducted by the main man down at the Rosaleda, David Redshaw. Mourinho...you've been warned.

How are things?

Quincy: I’m happy and I’ve adapted well. I feel strong, though I’m still not at my best.

Eliseu: I’m happy too and so are my family. I already knew the people here so I had no trouble adapting. Lots of things are the same as when I left, and I have to make the most of this opportunity.

-Is Eliseu a better player than he was last time?

E: I think so. Things change and I now take more responsibility. I’m more involved in dead ball situations. But everybody knows that when Duda comes back the free kicks are his.

-Can Málaga finish in the top ten?

Q: We have to take it one step at a time. We have good players and it’s a very hard league. I played in la segunda with Celta but I think it’s easier to play against the best. In the second division everybody is fighting to go up; in the first it’s more about quality.

-Who’s the quickest, Eliseu or Quincy?

E: It doesn’t matter. To have players with pace in the team is always good. On the right, on the left, in defence, anywhere...........

Q: I don’t know who is fastest. We need to use our speed, that’s the most important thing. The more players we have with pace the better. Seba and Rondón are both quick and this year we’ll win a lot of games with our speed.

-Have either of you been timed over 100 metres?

Q: I haven’t. I don’t know how to run without the ball. I need to see it to even run. I like to watch athletics but not practice it.

E: No, I’ve never been timed either.

-Quincy, you won the fans over after just one game....

Q: Yes they seem to be with me. When I get the ball it gives me confidence. When the fans are happy I always try to do better and raise my game. The atmosphere in the ground is brilliant. I wish I’d arrived months ago.

E: I tried to come in January but it wasn’t to be and I had to wait. It was probably better to arrive at the start of the season, as Muñiz said the main fault last year was a lack of pace. Now pace will be one of this team’s main weapons. This year we will be one of the best counter-attacking sides in the league. We will be lethal.

-Finally Eli, which Málaga is better? This team or the one you left a year ago?

E: I wouldn’t like to say. The nucleus of the team is still the same, but expectations are higher. We need to be ready to maintain the level the fans expect. The coach has given us a winning mentality. He came from Porto, where he almost always won, and his team was in the Champions League. So now we only think of winning, and that’s good for Málaga.

La Liga Showdown: A weekend to stand up and be counted

Now the Atletico Madrid fans have left Neptune in peace, at least for a few days, it's time for the Liga showdown. Nothing has been decided at either end of the table with the Liga trophy, qualification for Europe and survival all up for grabs. It promises to be a frenetic finale to a memorable season. Whatever Zinedine Zidane and Manuel Pellegrini spout in the press, there will only be one league winner this season and you will be hard pushed to find a betting man laying any serious cash on Real Madrid. Frankly I'm surprised there have been no gushing declarations from CR9 predicting a glorious end to his first year in Spain. Even Sergio 'We'll win 3-0' Ramos seems resigned to finishing second. Barcelona have the simple task of needing a win against relegation-threatened Real Valladolid at home. I'll give that one an odds on. On saturday Sevilla and Mallorca will be hoping to claim the final Champions League position while Getafe and Villarreal will fight it out for 6th place and qualification for next years Europa League.

The fun and games at either end of the table then fire up on Sunday evening. Five teams no less will be scrapping for their lives as the relegation trapdoor prepares to lock shut. I can't remember a relegation D-day quite like it, since 1983 by all accounts. Safe to say some have got it easier than others. Real Madrid and Barcelona aren't quite the teams you would choose to face in these circumstances, so you have to feel a little sorry for poor old Malaga and Valladolid, who let's face it look doomed. Tenerife face a tough trip to the Mestalla, Racing host Sporting Gijon, while everyones second favourite team, Xerez, travel up to Pamplona to lock horns with Osasuna. Whatever happens there'll be some tears, some celebrations and we'll move on to the cup final before everyone settles down for the World Cup. I bloody love World Cup summers. Enjoy the weekend.

La Liga relegation battle reaches dramatic climax: Three of five to go down

The battle for the title might be a two-way affair, but the all-out scrap for survival has gifted us a no holds barred fist-fight between five clubs who will be holding no punches come 7pm on Sunday evening. Racing Santander, Real Valladolid, Tenerife, Malaga and even Xerez enter the final matchday with  a real chance of starting next year in La Liga, but an equally real possibility of falling out the top flight. Three clubs will descend into 'hell', whilst two will celebrate a last-gasp escape from the jaws of La Segunda. What complicates matters a little more is than in Spain, a tie on points isn't decided by goal difference, but by the points earned in the games played against each other.

Currently Real Valladolid and Racing Santander are out of the relegation zone because in all the league games played between them, Tenerife and Malaga (imagine it as a mini-league), Valladolid and Racing have earned 8 points, with the rest all on 7. (Ignore my league table on the right, it's conveniently wrong). Then goal difference within that mini-league is taken into account and if the teams are still tied, on goal difference in the league overall. The final tiebreaker is the Fair Play League. Here is a slightly complicated look at what each team needs to do to stay up:

Real Valladolid (v Barcelona AWAY): If they win they are practically saved. In the case of a draw, they are down if two out of Malaga, Tenerife and Racing win. Lose and they need Xerez not to win and Racing, Tenerife and/or Malaga to lose.

Verdict: You're going down!

Malaga (v Real Madrid HOME): If they win they need one of Racing o Valladolid not to. In the event of a draw they need two out of Racing, Valladolid and Tenerife to lose OR for Valladolid to lose and Racing and Tenerife to draw. If they lose they will fall into La Segunda.

Verdict: You're going down!

Racing Santander (v Sporting Gijon HOME): If Racing win, they need two out of Valladolid, Malaga and Tenerife to not win. A draw and they need two out of Valladolid, Tenerife and Malaga to draw/lose. If Racing fall to defeat they need two of the rest to lose with even a Xerez victory not enough to relegate them.

Verdict: Lucky escape! (Rumour has it a dirty boardroom deal has already been struck with Sporting)

Tenerife (v Valencia AWAY): If they Tenerife win, they need both Malaga and Valladolid not to do so. To survive in the event of a draw they need two out of Malaga, Valladolid or Racing to lose. Lose and they drop down, regardless of what Xerez do.

Verdict: You're going down!

Xerez (v Osasuna AWAY): A modern day footballing miracle if they manage it. If Xerez beat Osasuna they need Malaga, Valladolid and one from Tenerife and Racing all to lose. If they don't win, they're down. Simple as.

Verdict: Miracle escape!

Agüero and Salvio join forces as Atletico defeat stubborn Tenerife (Highlights)

Atletico Madrid 3 - 1 Tenerife
(1-0) 11' Salvio, (2-0) 30' Salvio, (2-1) 61' Román, (3-1) 77' Agüero

Sergio Agüero has found himself a new friend. The two Argentinians Agüero and Salvio ripped Tenerife apart in a sazzling first half display that boded well for their midweek trip to Liverpool. Within half an hour Salvio had already chalked up two goals as Tenerife were torn apart by a rampant Atletico Madrid. With Forlán, Reyes and Simao also finding their form just at the right time, Quique has an embarrassment of riches at the top end of the field. Credit to Tenerife they stuck at it, and having pulled back a goal through Roman Martinez, they even had chances to level the match as Nino threatened briefly. Atletico weathered the storm with Sergio Agüero making sure of the win with little over ten minutes remaining. Forlan provided the pass and Agüero showed strength and composure to hold off the defender and sidefoot past Aragoneses. Not a bad way to prepare for Anfield. For Tenerife, another week stuck in the bottom three, as chances to pull themselves out of the abyss become fewer by the week.

Getafe 4 - 3 Sevilla
(1-0) 16' Adrian, (1-1) 33' Luis Fabiano, (1-2) 38' Kanoute, (2-2) 58' Pedro Leon, (2-3) 61' Luis Fabiano, (3-3) 75' Manu, (4-3) 93' Parejo

One of those matches that had absolutely everything, helped by some electric attacking football, clinical finishing and shocking defending. 31 shots on goal, 4 struck the woodwork, 7 flew in and one was an absolutely world class effort from Luis Fabiano. In short: Getafe take early lead, Sevilla fight back to take the lead having been severely under the cosh. Getafe equalise only for Luis Fabiano to score his second and put Sevilla infront once more. Getafe fight back a second time and after Frederic Kanoute was sent off went on to win thanks to a last gasp, re-taken penalty from Dani Parejo after Negredo had given the ball away in a truely unforgiveable manner. Thriller. The match also had implications for both races for Europe as Mallorca now hold the advantage for the race for fourth whilst Getafe are hot on the heels of Villarreal for the last Europa League position. And check out that dudes cigar and sombrero combo in the video. Classic. Who said Spanish Football was boring?

Sporting Gijon 0 - 2 Real Valladolid
(0-1) 80' Manucho, (0-2) 93' Baraja

Can Real Valladolid pull off yet another miraculous escape? Since Javier Clemente took over they've drawn two and won two, but more importantly havn't conceded a goal. A remarkable turnaround, especially when you take into account the farcical situation Clemente found the club in when he took over. With the former Spain coach employing five at the back, it was a solid defensive performance that provided the platform for Manucho and Baraja to score late goals and bag the all-important three points. Valladolid are not going down without a fight.

Racing Santander 1 - 2 Villarreal
(1-0) 38' Canales, (1-1) 70' Godin, (1-2) 82' Nilmar

Almeria 0 - 1 Espanyol
(0-1) 54' Luis Garcia

Mallorca 1 - 1 Malaga
(0-1) 86' Obinna, (1-1) 91' Aduriz

Athletic Bilbao 0 - 0 Osasuna

Bojan to the double as Barca breeze past Bilbao (Highlights)

Barcelona 4 - 1 Athletic Bilbao
(1-0) 26' Jeffren, (2-0) 41' Bojan, (3-0) 58' Bojan, (4-0) 66' Messi, (4-1) 76' Susaeta

I read recently that many 'people' thought Barcelona didn't have a strong squad. Made me chuckle. Those who doubted before, can surely doubt no more. Today against Athletic Bilbao, Jeffren, Bojan, Pedro and Jonathon all got minutes. Chygrynskiy played at centre-back and Maxwell filled in out on the left wing. Not one let Guardiola down. A team challenging for the Champions League positions no less where in town. 90 minutes and four goals later, those who had questioned the strength in depth were eating their words and Pep was back to the drawing board for Tuesdays tie against Arsenal. Tonight Bojan was back to his best. Two clinically taken goals reminded everyone why he caused such a fuss when he arrived on the scene two years ago. Victor Valdes continues to put his name forward for that final goalkeeper slot in Del Bosques squad. He's got the quality, no doubt about it, but when you consider what role the third keeper usually plays during a World Cup, namely a glorified cheerleader, you suspect he might miss the cut. Lionel Messi joined the party late on with a well-taken goal to make it 26 league goals for the season. Athletic had started strongly, but once Bojan had put Barca 1-0 up, they slowly disintegrated into a disorganised mess. It happens to the best of them in the Camp Nou. So onto Arsenal, and then you know who.

Real Zaragoza 2 - 0 Malaga
(1-0) 45' Ponzio, (2-0) 75' Suazo

Slowly but surely Real Zaragoza are dragging themselves away from the bottom three, and it seems certain that La Romareda will be welcoming first division football next season. Many questioned the appointment of ex-player Jose Aurelio Gay, if for nothing else but his unfortunate surname, but the man has worked wonders, and turned around a squad that was low and confidence and staring a second straight relegation full on in the face. The winter signings have also played their part, alongside the mercurial Ander Herrera, who continues to attract the interest of Arsene Wenger. The tricky youngster would be right at home in The Emirates. Today Ponzio set Zaragoza on the road to 32 points, with a bullet from outside the box that brought back memories of Diogos screamer last week against Valencia. 'Chupete' Suazo sealed the points with a well-taken strike on the volley, as Malaga offered very little. Infact they offered nothing and they are now rooted in a relegation dogfight. Ah, and can someone please explain to me why taking your shirt off in celebration of a goal warrants a yellow card? Lunacy.

Sevilla 3 - 0 Tenerife
(1-0) 22' Kanoute, (2-0) 44' Fabiano, (3-0) 88' Jose Carlos

Sevilla finally got their Champions League push back on track with a solid victory over relegation-doomed Tenerife, who are still to register a win away from home this season. It wasn't spectacular by any means, and before Frederic Kanoute slotted in their first, there were some hairy moments at the back, but the most important thing tonight were the three points. Luis Fabiano got back into goalscoring ways with a sumptuous turn and finish, before youth team product Jose Carlos wrapped things up with a delicious free-kick. Back in business at the Sanchez Pizjuan.

La Liga Sunday Highlights: Atletico Madrid downed by lowly Malaga

Atletico Madrid 0 - 2 Malaga
(0-1) 3' Duda, (0-2) 70' Javi Lopez

Perhaps they had one eye on their Copa del Rey Semi-final this week, or maybe they took a visit from lowly Malaga too lightly. Either way Atlético Madrid fell to a morale-sapping defeat at the hands of a team that started the day in the relegation zone. Duda hit the first early doors after a teasing cross from the right by Gamez, slipping the ball past De Gea from a tight angle. Atlético had plenty of possession but failed to create any sort of sustained danger and they were punished on 70 minutes when Javi Lopez struck the fatal second. The Copa del Rey and a late push for Europe represents all thats left for Atléticos season.

Sevilla 2 - 1 Valencia
(1-0) 21' Negredo, (2-0) 69' Negredo, (2-1) 90' Navarro

The battle for the Champions League spots ended with Sevilla earning the bragging rights, and closing the gap on Valencia to three points. They also hauled themselves about Mallorca to give a familiar feel to the top four. Negredo set them on the way with a tap-in following a flick on from a corner. His second was sumptuous, as Jesus Navas added another assist to his repertoire back-heeling to Negredo who then chipped Cesar from outside the box. David Villa was nowhere to be seen, as Valencia only really woke up after going two down. They got the goal which keeps their goal difference above Sevillas with a late Navarro header but they will be bitterly disappointed in letting a chance to stamp their authority on third place slip.

Villarreal 0 - 2 Osasuna
(0-1) 15' Juanfran, (0-2) 85' Juanfran

A shocking defensive display from Villarreal, summed up by the hapless Ángel Lopez, sealed Ernesto Valveredes fate as he was sacked shortly after the match. Osasuna hit the 'Yellow Submarine' with two breaks that both found former Real Madrid youth teamer Juanfran slotting past Diego Lopez. Camuñas and Monreal tore Villarreal apart down the left, as the home side offered little in attack and even less in defence. Camacho will be delighted with two away victories on the bounce as Osasuna seem to be saving themselves from their annual battle against the drop. For Villarreal the search begins for a new boss.

Xerez 2 - 1 Mallorca
(0-1) 23' Webo, (1-1) 52' Calvo, (2-1) 78' Calvo

Chapin went wild as Carlos Calvo scored two superb goals to give Xerez hope in their search of a miracle escape from the drop. Webo put Mallorca ahead as he planted an excellent diving header past the depairing Renan, and they had the chance to effectively kill off Xerezs hopes when Undiano Mallenco pointed to the spot after Aythami had been adjudged to have felled Aritz Aduriz in the area. The striker picked himself up to take the spotkick, but Renan produced a fantastic dive to repell his effort and the comeback was well and truely on. Xerez have struggled for goals this year, but Calvos first was an absolute scorcher. There appeared to be little on when he picked up the ball a full 30 yards out but he unleashed a rocket that flew past Arouate. The second was just as good as he danced his way into the box before slotting past the keeper. Can they really do it? Their next game against Bilbao away and their home match against Real Madrid in two weeks may give us a clue.

Tenerife 1 - 3 Real Zaragoza
(1-0) 48' Juanlu, (1-1) 76' Suazo (p), (1-2) 79' Colunga, (1-3) 82' Lafita

Tenerife were left to rue their lack of threat infront of goal as they only had a goal from Juanlu to show for their domiannt first 50 minutes. But Real Zaragoza only needed six minutes to smash three past Aragoneses and seal a invaluable three points away from home. The first two came from their new signings: Suazo finding the net from the spot after Arizmendi was tripped in the box, and Colunga dinking the ball over the keeper to mark a dream debut for 'Los Maños'. Lafita left the result in no doubt when he struck an angled beauty from way out, as the battle against the drop took a new twist.

Real Valladolid 1 - 1 Almeria
(0-1) 12' Cruzat, (1-1) 80' Arzo

Getafe 0 - 0 Racing Santander

La Liga Sunday: Cristiano Ronaldo - The good, the bad and the ugly

Real Madrid 2 - 0 Malaga
(1-0) 35' Cristiano Ronaldo, (2-0) 39' Cristiano Ronaldo

It takes them a while to get going, during which they are normally indebted to Casillas and poor finishing from their opponents, but it only takes a couple of flashes of excellence to get Real Madrid out of jail and on the road to three points. Today it was Cristiano Ronaldo who took on the responsibility and cracked in two goals to put Malaga out of sight. Yet his brilliance sometimes comes at a cost, and todays was an disgraceful elbow in the face of Mtiliga which earned him a red card and sees him banned from next weeks tricky match against Deportivo. The Galaticos are still not gelling as a unit (bar that sweet move for the first goal!), but as long as they can keep on Barcas tail, when the machine finally clicks they could certainly mount a serious challenge for the league. Trouble for Pelligrini is that it's taking far too long. Next weeks match at the Riazor will be pivotal.

Getafe 1 - 0 Atletico Madrid
(1-0)38' Manu

Atlético Madrid had never lost before in the Coliseum, but today they never showed any signs of continuing that record with a performance so shocking, a 1-0 scoreline didnt do it justice. De Gea saved them on countless occasions, with Getafe deserving much more than the solitary goal from Manu, who is enjoying a sweet run of form. Assuncaos second sending off in ten days rounded off a dismal day for Atletico. Their defence isn't quite Real Zaragoza territory, but not far off. They'll be no Copa del Rey on this evidence.

Tenerife 0 - 0 Valencia

Valencia were expected to leave Tenerife with three points in the backpocket, yet it will be Tenerife who will look back on a lost opportunity to claim maximum points. Cesar, for once, played a blinder and pretty much took on Tenerife on his own as Silva, Mata and Pablo Hernandez didnt click as they so usually do, with even David Villa enduring a torrid afternoon. The 'alternative' for La Liga are not really an alternative at all, more like contenders for third.

Villarreal 4 - 2 Real Zaragoza
(1-0) 3' Capdevila, (2-0) 19' Nilmar (3-0) 25' Rossi, (3-1) 75' Eliseu, (3-2) 82' Lafita, (4-2) 87' Ibergaza

After being handed a pasting by Valencia last week, Ernesto Valverde must have smiled when he saw that their next fixture was Real Zaragoza at home. Guaranteed three points he must have thought. And he wasnt wrong as Zaragoza proved that whilst their defending is suspect at La Romareda, away from home it is non-existent. Whoever their defensive coach is, that's if there even is one, he should take a long hard look in the mirror, because the message is not getting across. 25 minutes of some of the most shocking defending you'll ever see saw Villarreal smash in three goals and a rout was on. Much to Mr Gays credit, his team came out in the second half psyched, and a comeback was on the cards as they brought it back to 3-2, only for Ibergaza to destroy the dream with three minutes left. This 'Chupete' Suazo character looks like more money well spent by Zaragoza....all those goals he's banging in.

Xerez 1 - 2 Osasuna
(1-0) 9' Monreal, (1-1) 22' Bermejo, (1-2) 83' Camuñas

Poor old Xerez. Before the match you feel a sense of renewed hope around the stadium. The stands were full, unusual for a match against Osasuna, the manager had named an attacking line-up the day before, and the players were on the pitch going through punishing drills for 45 minutes before the match. Nestor Gorosito has definitely brought in a higher level of professionalism around the club, but the sad truth is the players aren't up to the grade. They fell behind to a cracking early goal from Monreal, the young full-back striving to be involved in Spains South African adventure this summer. Xerez quickly hit back with a stunning goal of their own as Momo teed up Bermejo to round off an electric team move. Trouble for Xerez is that normally if you dont have quality you have to make up for it with physical presence and fitness levels akin to those of olympians. By the end they were running on empty, and ex-Xerez man Camunñas made them pay by slotting in with seven minutes left. They're going down.

Espanyol 1 - 1 Mallorca
(1-0) 49' Osvaldo, (1-1) 80' Borja Valero

Sporting Gijon 0 - 1 Racing Santander
(0-1) 44' Geijo

Copa del Rey: Barcelona KO'd in the Cup

They're human after all. Having swept everything placed infront of them last season, they have fallen at the first hurdle in 2010 after succumbing to an aggregate defeat by Sevilla in the Copa del Rey. The match was an absolute thriller and a firm response to those who proclaimed the cup a dead duck last week when only a total of 90,000 spectators turned up to all the cup ties combined (not enough to fill the Camp Nou). Barca pushed and pushed for the two goals they needed to go through, but a sweet Xavi effort was all they got as they found Spanish number three Andrés Palop in superb form. Ibrahimovic had a shocker, whilst 'Titi' Henry was lucky not to receive a straight red for a disgraceful challenge on Jesus Navas. In fairness, after last season, they was only one way they could go, but so soon?

Elsewhere, Real Madrids tormentors Alcorcón bravely bowed out at Racing Santander (who are struggling for dear life to hold onto their teenage star Sergio Canales); Valencia grabbed two early goals that would have seen them through, only to then concede two as Depor secured qualification; Getafe smashed five past a hopeless Málaga side who seemed content to get tie out of the way to concentrate on league affairs; Celta Vigo, the only non top-flight side left in the cup, scored a 90th minute penalty to send Villarreal crashing out, whilst Osasuna got the goal they needed to qualify at Hercules' expense on away goals.

La Liga Results-Highlights: Matchday 14 - Atlético Madrid in freefall

Atlético Madrid 1 - 2 Villarreal

(1-0) 36' Simao, (1-1) 48' Fuster, (1-2) 90' Llorente
  • For Atlético Madrid things go from bad to worse to catastrophic. If it's not Ujfalusi it will be Perea. If it's neither of them, Pablo will have a go. Today Juanito took centre stage with two errors that gifted Villarreal their two goals. This defence is guaranteed relegation material.
  • The match could have been over after half an hour were it not for Sergio Asenjo and some poor finishing from Villarreal. Even after conceding, Villarreal set about the home side with a menace that has characterised their rapid ascent up La Liga in recent weeks, with a 90th minute winner their reward. Villarreals patience with manager Ernesto Valverde is beginning to bear fruit.
  • There was further bad news for Quique after his most consistent performer in recent matches, Jose Antonio Reyes, was taken to hospital after a nasty fall following a collision with Diego Lopez. One point off the relegation zone and in one hell of a mess. Atlético chose the perfect time to release their own brand of bottled wine!

Sporting Gijón 0 - 1 Sevilla

(0-1) 8' Kanoute
  • Sevilla leapfrog back above Valencia after they became the first team to walk out of El Molinon with three points in the bag this season. It was a virtuoso performance but they just about did enough for the win after resisting a late charge from Sporting.
  • The goal came from a glorious move involving Kanoute and Jesus Navas. Manolo Jiminez will be happy that the man from Mali is finding the back of the net, especially with the injury to Luis Fabiano and Alvaro Negredos continuing goal drought. The Spain striker was guilty of a shocking miss today, but he'll come good.
  • Sporting rallied late on but failed to turn their dominance into goals. They missed Bilic more than Sevilla missed Fabiano, and without their Croatian hitman they will struggle to convert their chances. But with 20 points on the board and a solid home record, I can't see them struggling too much this season.

Racing Santander 3 - 2 Xerez

(0-1) 3' Bermejo, (1-1) 25' Lacen, (2-1) 48' Arana, (2-2) 68' Antoñito, (3-2) 82' Xisco
  • Same old story for Xerez as they become the first away team to lose at the Sardinero this season. I'll take some comfort in the fact that they scored two away from Chapín, and put up a mighty good fight. But the truth is they simply don't have the quality to compete in the Primera Divisíon.
  • Mario 'The Gladiator' Bermejo put Xerez ahead just after kick-off, but the signalled the start of Santanders procession towards the three points. Antoñito gave Xerez hope as he struck the goal to make it 2-2, but their defence went missing yet again as Xisco headed in Santanders late winner.
  • Miguel Angel Portugal is doing a sterling job at Racing and has managed to lift them out of the danger zone. Meanwhile, 'Cuco' Ziganda is under intense pressure. Plenty of Xerecistas are calling for his head, but I honestly don't believe anyone else could do much better in his position. Although why he persists with Abel and Bergantiños is beyond me. To survive in this division you need a half-decent defence and a goalscorer. Xerez have neither.

Getafe 2 - 1 Tenerife

(1-0) 38' Albín, (2-0) 68' Albín, (2-1) 81' Juanlu
  • Two goals from young Uruguayan Juan Albín were enough to send Getafe into the top half of the table, only 5 points off the European spots. Him and Pedro Leon carried their team to victory, with Leon in particular sensational down the right side.
  • Míchel can be happy with how the season is panning out for his Getafe side. Eighth in the league and still in the Copa del Rey. The club from Madrid has become the new breeding ground for young managers. Quique, Schuster and Michael Laudrup have all passed through the gates of the Coliseum. How long will Míchel last at Getafe? Not long if he keeps this up.
  • Tenerife will be quietly content with their battling display but two lapses of concentration cost them dear. First was keeper Aragoneses misjudging a corner; the second was the fault of dallying defender Manolo Martínez. Criminal at this level and they find themselves 2 points from the relegation zone.

Real Valladolid 1 - 1 Malaga

(0-1) 34' Duda, (1-1) 68' Jesús Gámez (o.g)
  • Both teams were desparate for the win, so it was only to be expected that the game would end in a stalemate. Málaga now havn't won since the first day if the season, and quite how Muñiz is still in a job is a mystery, especially with the fans having started to call for his head some time ago.
  • Real Valladolid perhaps shaded it on the day, with Portuguese striker Diego Costa easily securing man-of-the-match. They now find themselves in the middle of a eight-team group from 11th down to 18th; all within four points from the last relegation spot. It sure is tight down there.
  • Málaga came out all guns blazing in the first half, but only had Dudas 34th minute goal to show for it at the break. The second half belonged to Real Valladolid, but in the end it was an own goal that put them on level terms. Both teams are definite relegation candidates.

Almería 1 - 1 Deportivo la Coruña

(1-0) 58' Uche, (1-1) 74' Pablo Álvarez
  • An entertaining match that saw plenty of opportunities but only two goals. Uche scored a cracking header and Pablo Álvarez finished off a scintillating move from Deportivo. Lotinas three substitutes all played a part in the goal. Hugo Sanchez is being lynched for a lack of substitutions.
  • But to be fair to the Almería manager he got his tactics spot on, stiffling Deportivo with his players asserting pressure in all areas of the pitch. But a lack of fresh legs towards the end saw Almería tire horribly. Hugo could be given the boot soon if his presidents post-match interview is anything to go by. Christmas is fast approaching and La Ligas fat cats are getting nervous.
  • Deportivo, on the other hand, are flying high and remain in the UEFA Europa League spots. Today they had one decent attack and they scored from it. Apart from that they profited from a profligate Almería attack. They did what all good teams do, punctuate even when playing poorly.

Osasuna 0 - 1 Mallorca

(0-1) 60' Castro
  • Gregorio Manzano for president! Today he sat Martí and Suarez infront of his back four and it worked wonders as Osasuna weren't given a sniff. Mallorca win their first match away from the ONO Estadi and are only three points from third. An unbelievable achievement for the islanders.
  • 'Chori' Castros goal was an absolute corker, easily goal of the week. After a tasty run he cut in from the right and sent an arrow of a shot into Ricardos top-left corner. Unstoppable, and well worthy of the three points. But even more impressive were the Mallorca defence, thet fough fire with fire and repelled everything Osasuna threw at them.
  • It's not quite panic stations yet for Camachos team, as they head that eight-team group who lie within four points of each other. But a couple more setbacks like this could see them drawn into a mammoth relegation fight with pretty much the whole bottom half of the table.

La Liga Saturday Round-up: 07.11.09

Atletico Madrid will have to wait a few more months before they get another chance to break their derby jinx, as Real Madrid left the Vicente Calderon with another three points in the bag. Real came flying out the blocks and as has so often happened in the past, took an early lead with a Kaká belter from outside the box on 4 minutes. Marcelo doubled their lead with a close range drive from an angle after 24 minutes and suddenly Atletico were all over the place, chasing the match with four upfront and two in the middle, and it told as Lass and Xabi Alonso exerted total control. What was surprising is that it took until the 63rd minute for Real's third, when Higuain robbed the dithering Perea of possession and raced into the box to poke past Sergio Asenjo. But the match turned two minutes later when Sergio Ramos was shown red for taking out Agüero when through on goal. Forlán (who had a poor match) finished an excellent Atletico move to give them hope, and suddenly it was game on as Agüero powered pass Pepe to shoot across Casillas and into the net. The atmosphere was electric for the final few frantic minutes, and Casillas made a fantastic stop from Agüero at the death as the home side finished the match with five up top, but Real Madrid held on for a vital win in their two-horse race with Barca.

Barcelona were made to work by a well-oiled Mallorca unit, but their greater potency upfront proved crucial. Pedro put Barca infront after an outrageous back-heel pass from Ibrahimovic in the 11th minute, but Mallorca levelled eight minutes later when Nunes headed in from a corner. Mallorca stood toe to toe with Barca, but the champions killed the match just before half time with another goal from young Pedro (what a season he's having) after 40 minutes, and a close range header from Thierry Henry two minutes later. The second half saw Mallorca show the same determination and will as the first half and they certainly werent overawed in the Camp Nou. The introduction of Messi, Xavi and Iniesta, who had all started on the bench, saw Barca lift the pace, and Messi lifted some of the pressure placed on him by the media, when he stroked home a penalty earned by Ibrahimovic in the 86th minutes. There was still time for Mallorca to restore some pride two minutes into injury time with a goal from Keita, but the match had already been won and Barca march on.

In the Heliodoro Stadium, neither Tenerife nor Málaga got the three points they both so desparately needed, as both defenses failed to cover themselves in glory. Román put the islanders infront after 18 minutes with a well-taken goal inside the area, after a fantastic run and cross from the ever-dangerous Omar. Seven minutes later they were two up when Alfaro smashed high into the net following a slide rule pass from Kome. But Málaga refused to cave in, and were back in it after 27 minutes when Portuguese striker Edinho tapped in a rebound from Obinna's shot. Tenerife had their chances to extend their lead, including a rejected stone-wall penalty, but were made to pay for their profligacy when young Javi Lopez curled in a delicious goal with little more than ten minutes left.

Team of the moment Deportivo La Coruña planted themselves in the Champions League positions with a deserved 0-2 victory away to Getafe. Former Valencia striker Mista repaid the faith shown by manager Lotina, by powering in a diving header after 14 minutes. The Galicians didnt make their task easy when Riki was shown red after 25 minutes, but having lost against Real Madrid with a numerical advantage, Getafe seem to prefer to play against eleven. Brazilian Luis Filipe was giving Getafe's Miguel Torres a torrid left down the left flank, and having set up the first goal, Mista returned the favour by squaring across goal for Luis Filipe to tap in for the second on 58 minutes. Getafe would have been horrified when Deportivo were reduced to nine with Sergio's dismissal in the 71st minute, but Coruña failed to take further advantage of Getafes inability to play against less than eleven men!

Getafe 0 - 2 Deportivo
Tenerife 2 - 2 Málaga
Barcelona 4 - 2 Mallorca
Atletico Madrid 2 - 3 Real Madrid
