Champions League Semis: Real Madrid vs Barcelona Preview (2nd Leg)

Real Madrid vs Barcelona (2nd Leg)
May 4 @ 2:30AM (Balls Channel)

The el clasico series this season will come to an end with the 2nd leg of the Champions League Seminfinals.  So far, there is one draw and both teams have one win (click here for recap, stats, etc of el clasico I & II and here for recap, stats, etc of el clasico III):

el clasico I – La Liga (Apr 16): Barcelona 1-1 Real Madrid
el clasico II – Copa del Rey (Apr 20): Barcelona 0-1 Real Madrid
el clasico III – Champions League Semis leg 1 (Apr 27): Real Madrid 0-2 Barcelona

Barca comes into this match with a 2-away goal advantage.  It’s not a big mountain to overcome but according to Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho in his post-match comment in the 1st leg game, it’s an “impossible” task.  His skipper disagrees with him, though.  According to Iker Casillas:

"The names of the two teams that will play the final haven't been inscribed yet.  You never know what may happen. We will play in Barcelona knowing a final is set to take place in a month and that any of the four teams still in the championship may be in it."

And I agree with Casillas, never say never.  And in football, you never know.  But for Real to win this match, they need to score goals, they need to change tactics as the defensive football they played in the 1st leg did not work and honestly it was unpleasant to watch.  I mean, they have a lot of great offensive players like Kaka, Gonzalo Higuain, CRonaldo, Karim Benzema, etc. so playing offensively won't be a problem for them.  However, I wonder how the team will function with Mourinho banned from the game after he was sent off during the 1st leg.

For Barca, on the other hand, have happy news for the injury-plagued team.  Andres Iniesta and Eric Abidal trained normally and are in the squad for the game.  Eric Abidal has been out since March 17 from a surgery to remove a tumour in his liver and now the doctors have given him the clearance and he’s included in the squad for this match.  I don’t know if he’ll be in the 1st eleven or could just be an unused substitute.  Guardiola has said that, “Abi' can't play 90 minutes, he has lost weight. But he is in perfect health and he'll be able to help us.” So maybe a few minutes of game time?  But either way, I am glad he’s fully recovered.  Andres Iniesta, who was sidelined in the 1st leg because of a calf injury, has also joined the training and is included in the squad, no official word yet if he’s starting.  Carles Puyol, however, worked separately from the rest of the team as he continues his recovery.  He played during the 1st leg (he had a spectacular game, btw) but did not play in Barca’s domestic match during the weekend, probably being rested in time for the 2nd leg.

Barca can capitalize on Real Madrid missing two of its key defense players, Sergio Ramos and Pepe, due to suspension.  They may have a 2-goal advantage, but I hope Barca won’t play too defensively (although I shouldn't worry as that isn't how they play).  Guardiola has said they will attack, but attack with common sense, so maybe we'll to see some amazing goals from them.

I do hope this time it will be a showcase of great football from the best teams of this sport and not a war of the words as what happened in the 1st leg (click here to read on the 1st leg controveries/issues).  There was just too much controversy that it detracted from the amazing goals that Messi scored.

After three stormy el clasico matches within two weeks, tensions will be high, so I guess UEFA is not taking chances in this match as they are sending Pierluigi Collina to monitor this game.  I love this guy.  When I started watching football, he was one of the most respected referees.  A highly recognizable figure in football, he even had a sponsorship deal with Opel, how many referees could say the same?  He’s retired now but he’s considered as the best referee of all time.

So I hope both teams will play clean and fair and I’m looking forward to an exciting match.  I’ll be crossing my fingers for a Barca-Schalke finals J

Aggregate Score:
Real Madrid: 0
Barcelona: 2

For the win:
Real Madrid:
They need to score 3 more goals than Barca will

Barcelona:
If they can hold on to their 2 goal advantage (so a draw or letting Real score one goal), the can advance them to the finals.

Stadium: Camp Nou (Barcelona‘s home turf)

Barca Injury Update:
Eric Abidal (liver tumour): now fit to play after more than a month of absence
Adriano (hamstring): misses the match
Bojan Krkić (knee) : misses the match
Maxwell (groin): misses the match
Gabriel Milito (thigh tear) : misses the match
Andrés Iniesta (calf): now fit to play after missing the 1st leg
Carles Puyol (recovered from a knee injury that he had since January but he suffered from hamstring problems in his 1st game back): he played in the el clasico I but was stretchered off during the game, was an unused substitute in the el clasico II and played in the el clasico III.  I’m including him in this list as you never know what happens when you come off a long injury-related absence.
Martín Montoya (broken collarbone and dislocated left shoulder… ouch!): he’s not really on of the 1st 11 players but he’s a full-back, so considering the injury-plagued defense of Barca, they need all the defense players they can get

Yellow/Red Card and Suspension Updates:
Suspended:
Jose Manuel Pinto (Barcelona) – from a red card
Pepe (Real Madrid) – from a red card
Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid) – from picking up two yellow cards
Jose Mourinho (Real Madrid) – he was sent off during the 1st leg for mocking the ref

One card away from suspension:
Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)
Raul Albiol (Real Madrid)
Angel Di Maria (Real Madrid)
Emmanuel Adebayor (Real Madrid)

It says something for a team to have a lot of cards, don't you think?

Champions League Semis: Real Madrid vs Barcelona Preview (1st Leg)

Real Madrid vs Barcelona (1st Leg)
April 28 @ 2:30AM (Balls Channel)

Okay, so far there’s one draw and one win for Real Madrid in the el clasico series (click here for match recap, stats, etc. of the previous el clasicos):

el clasico I – La Liga (Apr 16): Barcelona 1-1 Real Madrid
el clasico II – Copa del Rey (Apr 20): Barcelona 0-1 Real Madrid

The Champions League semifinals leg 1 and 2 will be the last in the el clasicos series.  Will Real Madrid continue their winning momentum?  Or can Barca scrounge up a win? Real Madrid now seems to be the favorites.

The good news for Barca is that Andres Iniesta escaped a match ban from picking up 2 yellow cards but the bad news is, he’s injured.  Barca cannot seem to catch a break.  I’m not too worried with Iniesta missing the match as they still have David Villa, Leo Messi, Xavi Hernandez, etc up front.  What I’m worried about is Barca missing its key defensive players to injury and illness.  They will be without Eric Abidal, Adriano and Maxwell.  Carles Puyol as well sa fellow center-back Gabriel Milito are both struggling to be fit for Wednesday’s match.  Puyol’s presence will be sorely missed should he be sidelined in this game.  He was able to play in the el clasico I but was stretchered off during the game.  In the el clasico II, he was an unused substitute (maybe Guardiola was resting him).  So even if he plays in the el clasico III, I doubt he’ll be the same defensive force as he was prior to injury.

Puyol stretchered off during the La Liga match
I’ve said it before, a strong offense might win Barca some matches but facing a team like Real Madrid, the need both their offense and defense to be strong.

Another thing Barca should watch out for is Real’s aggressive style of play (they say Real finishes a match with 10 men, as one player is sent off.  They had players sent off in each of their last three meetings with Barca).  They don’t want to add another one to their list of injured players.

I’m hoping for Pep Guardiola to come up with some brilliant tactical formation to manage their defense dilemma and win big in this match.  This isn’t the same Barca team that annihilated Real Madrid 5-0 last November, but this will be an exciting match to watch, for sure.

Champions League Semis: Schalke vs Manchester United (1st Leg)

Schalke vs Manchester United (1st Leg)
April 27 @ 2:30AM

Edwin Van der Sar, one of Man U’s dependable figures, chases one last Champions League glory.  The 40 year-old Dutch goalie is set to retire after this season. But will an old foe, in the person of Raul, stand in his way? I love how eufa.com calls them the “two golden oldies” but it kinda makes me feel old as when I started to follow football and the Champions League, these two “golden oldies” were at the heights of their careers. Now they are at their twilight (why do I sound so poetic today??? I almost typed in “the epic battle” to describe this match… I think I’ve watched too many Barney scenes in HIMYM).

Man U are the match favorites with their Ryan Giggs (another “golden oldie”), Van der Sar, Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and the iconic Sir Alex Ferguson.  But I will be rooting for Schalke. This may be Schalke's first ever trip to the Champions League semi-finals but, who knows, maybe they could stage another surprising upset like they did with their 5-2 victory against the defending champions, Inter Milan (and to think it was an away game).

I like Schalke coach Ralf Rangnick’s outlook, he says, “Who knows how many of these players will play in a match like this in the coming years? The same goes for me. This is my biggest game so far judging by the attention it is getting in general and from the media. Surely, over the course of these two games, Manchester have more to lose than us. We have to stay focused but also enjoy this.”

With all this talk of golden oldies, let’s now take a look at the up-and-coming players. Could Schalke’s Manuel Neuer be the next Van der Sar?
He’s kinda cute, don’t you think?

Interesting fact: Raul may have scored 71 Champions League goals and he's a serious threat to defense (scoring a goal every two games), but he has never scored against Van der Sar in the competition. Another interesting fact, Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to sign Raul when he left Real Madrid. But because Raul already had some sort of verbal agreement with Schalke, he turned down Man U’s offer (coz he’s classy that way :P).

Champions League QF: Inter Milan vs Schalke Preview (2nd Leg)

Inter Milan vs Schalke (2nd Leg)
April 14 @

Inter Milan, will have to work really hard to overturn a 3-point deficit.  With Schalke coming in with 5 away goals from a stunning 1st Leg win, Inter would really need to score a lot of goals.  But I think It think, other than scoring goals, they should also have to fix their defense problems which was the cause of them conceding 5 goals to Schalke in the last match.  Aren’t Italians known for their very organized defense?  Or was it Germany?

Initially, I was rooting for Inter on this side of the table, but somehow the defending champions, doesn’t seem to be the strong team they were last season.  Now I’m rooting for Schalke, with Raul leading the way to defeat Man U.  And hopefully, face off with Barca in the finals J

Aggregate Score:
Schalke: 5

For the win:
Inter Milan:
Except for a 1 - 0 (in their favour), Chelsea just needs to score at least one more than the Man U, but the more goals they can produce, the better as these will be valuable away goals in case the final aggregate score will end on a tie.

Schalke:
At the very least, a draw can qualify to the next round

Key players who’ll miss the action:
            Jefferson Farfan (Schalke) – suspension

Stadium: Arena AufSchalke (Schalke‘s home turf)

Champions League QF: Real Madrid vs Tottenham Preview (2nd Leg)

Real Madrid vs Tottenham (2nd Leg)
April 14 @

With a 4-point goal advanatge, it would seem that Real Madrid will most likely be advancing to the semi-finals, a first in eight years.

There’s isn’t much to say about this match, as like the Barca vs Tottenham game, this also seems like a formality, unless of course Tottenham pulls off a miracle.  Real must be very comfortable with their lead that coach Jose Mourinho can afford to have two of his key players Sergio Ramos and Angel Di Maria miss the match to avoid picking up a 2nd yellow card (and subsequently miss the next match).

They are seriously on the path of trying to reclaim the Champions League title they have won 9 times.  But they will have to go thru Barca first.

Aggregate Score:
Tottenham: 0

For the win:
Real Madrid:
Same as Barca, they almost have this in the bag and most likely advancing to the semis.  a draw and even letting Tottenham score a few goals (but no more than 5 goals to Real’s goals) can get them to the semis

Tottenham:
They need to score 5 more goals than Real Madrid in order to advance to the semis

Stadium: White Hart Lane (Tottenham‘s home turf)
