Bisphosphonates Reduce Colon Cancer Risk - The scientists found that the use of bisphosphonates, which usually consume millions of healthy women to prevent bone loss, can reduce the risk of colorectal cancer by 50 percent.
This research has been published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology on February 22.
Lead researcher Professor Gad Rennert of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Faculty of Medicine said the findings could support the role of bisphosphonates as a new drug for cancer prevention.
It was also found that the use of bisphosphonates prior to the diagnosis associated with reduced risk of colorectal cancer significantly. The result remained the same after adjustments were made with various other risk factors such as family medical history, diet, physical activity, body mass index, and the use of other drugs such as aspirin, and statins.
Rennert and colleagues took data from molecular epidemiological studies of colorectal cancer (MECC). With these data, the research team then evaluated the use of bisphosphonates in 1866 postmenopausal women volunteers.
