El Salvador and Nicaragua each qualified for the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup. They have met on seven previous occasions at the Central American championship, with El Salvador winning six straight before tying 1-1 in the 2009 tournament in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. In that game, an 18th minute own goal by Nicaragua's Silvio Aviles put El Salvador ahead. Nicaragua, however, equalized late in the game through Marlon Jose Medina.
El Salvador has appeared in the most games in Copa Centroamericana history (45), while Nicaragua holds the record for most defeats (23).
