This first leg against the Belgian side Bruges was one of the best games at Anfield. The Reds were two goals behind inside twelve minutes and any thoughts of the cup were sinking fast. This side was made of strong stuff though and played so well that they came back to win the game three two. Lambert opened the scoring for Bruges as he intercepted a Neal header and lobbed Clemence. Seven minutes later Julien Cools volleyed home a second goal and the Kop was stunned. They held their lead to half time and then came the team talk to inspire the Reds. David Fairclough played better in the second half and gave the Belgian side lots to think about. Ray Kennedy scored on he hour mark and within two minutes it was all square as Jimmy Case rammed home a rebound from a Kennedy shot. Just three minutes later and Kevin Keegan sent the keeper the wrong way with a penalty kick to send the Reds wild.

Goals : Keegan (15)
Att : 33,000

The danger in this tie was that Bruges, on their own ground were only one goal behind and had two away goals to their name too. To add to that Bruges hadn't conceded at home all season. After twelve minutes Lambert scored from the penalty spot and things looked bleak. That was until the Reds were awarded a free kick three minutes later on the edge of the Bruges box. Hughes rolled the ball to Keegan who blasted the ball past the Bruges keeper. The Reds a goal ahead now defended their way to the trophy. They rarely attacked but contained the home side well. The Reds had won their second UEFA Cup.

Liverpool Hambourg Finale Super Coupe 1977

6 décembre 1977
Anfield, Liverpool
Attendance 34981

The return of Kevin Keegan to Anfield was always going to be a highly charged occasion, but nobody could hâve guessed that Keegan, the one time favourite of thé Kop, would be on thé wrong end of a thrashing. The Kop delighted in it, and Keegan was obliged to listen to some barbed chanting that must hâve made him wonder why he ever left Merseyside.
Phil Thompson began thé massacre and helped turn a dull-looking affair into an evening of unexpected entertainment. His goal started from a Steve Heighway corner, which Thompson half connected with at the near post. The bail rebounded from a defender and Thompson swivelled elegantly to fire thé loose bail into thé back of thé net. Five minutes before half-time, Terry McDermott added a second by stealing in unmarked in thé area and lashing thé bail home from 12 yards.

Kaltz had been outstanding for Hamburg, but after the interval even he could not contain Liverpool's attack. In the 55th minute, McDermott, with another stinging shot, made it three and, a minute later, he collected his hat-trick after Dalglish had foxed thé German defence with a decoy run. David Fairclough added number five in the 86th minute and, with two minutes remaining, Dalglish rounded off an impressive evening by scoring thé Reds's sixth.
The night belonged to McDermott and not to Keegan. SV Hamburg had been outclassed and Keegan was beginning to learn what it is like to play against Liverpool, who had proved that there was indeed life after Keegan. The doubters had been silenced and Liverpool had another trophy for their collection.

Liverpool: Clémence, Neal, Smith, Thompson, R. Kennedy, Hughes, Dalglish, McDermott, Heighway (Johnson), Fairclough, Case.

SV Hamburg: Kargus, Ripp, Nogly, Barti, Hidien, Kaltz, Keegan, Keller, Zaczyk (Steffenhagen), Magath (Eigl), Volkert.
Scorers: Thompson (21), McDermott (40, 55, 56), Fairclough (86), Dalglish (88).

Kevin Keegan Newcastle The story

Kevin Keegan
Newcastle The story

Keegan joined Newcastle United  and spent two seasons there, during which time he was extremely popular with the supporters. He played 78 times, scored 48 goals and helped them to promotion from the Second Division in 1984, within a team which also contained Peter Beardsley, Chris Waddle and Terry McDermott. His contribution to Newcastle's promotion, which ended their six-year absence from the First Division, earned him iconic status on Tyneside. The move of a player of his stature to a Second Division Club was unheard of, which caused euphoria on Tyneside. So much so, the television series, 'Auf Wiedersehen Pet' used a newspaper clipping about Keegan moving to Newcastle, to persuade Oz to go back to Tyneside.
Keegan announced his retirement prior to the end of the 1983–1984 season. His last league game came against Brighton and Hove Albion, scoring in a 3–1 victory. Keegan's final appearance for Newcastle came in a friendly against Liverpool some days later, leaving the pitch in a helicopter whilst still dressed in his kit. He moved with his family to Spain, stating that he would never enter football management, although he did carry out occasional work as a football pundit for British television.
