North Korea: Nuclear Program for Peaceful Objectives


SEOUL - North Korea (North Korea) said the development of nuclear enrichment facility that they have designed only to produce energy. North Korea Party said this in response to U.S. suspicions.

National newspaper Rodong Shimbun said North Korea also is building a light water reactor. "To guarantee the energy supply to the reactors, a modern nuclear enrichment facility is needed,"said the newspaper as reported by AFP on Wednesday (29/12/2010).

North Korea reveals its nuclear facilities to an expert from the United States (U.S.) last month, sparking concerns from many quarters. U.S. officials and some experts say the nuclear facilities could easily be diverted to produce weapons of mass destruction.

The U.S. State Department has at least one suspected North Korean nuclear facilities, other than those already demonstrated to the public.

North Korea has shut reactor that produces plutonium, in accordance with the agreements reached through the six-party talks. But North Korea left the talks later six-party talks in April 2009 and it conducted a nuclear test one month later.

North Korea's uranium development center provides a way to make an atomic bomb. "Development of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes is the right of every developing country. That right is supposed to be fair, not only to certain countries only,"said Rodong daily.

"Some major countries, including the U.S., have the wrong idea with regard nuclear program as a threat and hit you and give sanction to us," added the newspaper.
