In addition to Search (see below) and err..4U2C, I have to add this highly respected band Cromok.

Sam, Din (RIP), Karl and Miji were Malaysian students studying in  University of Wollongong, Sydney when they decided to form a thrash metal band in late 80s. They caused quite a sensation in the Sydney underground scene with their brand of unique straight up thrash metal sounds back then.

Always keen to stick to their roots, Cromok's blend of metal with Malay traditisional elements made them some sort of a local icon ..as evident in the adaptation of 'Ulek Mayang' (a Terengganu folk song) as the intro to 'Metallurgical'  (from their defining debut album 'Image of Purity').

CROMOK- 'Prophecy'-Live in Australia, 1989

last month i ran into Sam buying a nasi bungkus at Gerai Kak Nor, Pasar TTDI. Apparently he is currently an engineer at the nearby VETS building (formerly IBM tower)

It was 1986 . I went to a seedy music shop at the nearby kompleks PKNS to get a copy of Search's 'Langit dan Bumi' cassette straight after one religious class (kelas mengaji darjah tiga). They successfully taught me 3 fundamental  things in life:

1) not to be so uptight
2) loosen up a bit
3) and be a good kid at the same time.

i heard they are still going strong until today
